On Ezra Chater's journey to Martinique, he studied botany. Most specifically, he looked at dahlias. Here are some pictures of the many varieties of these interesting flowers. Dahlias originated in Mexico, where they are the national flower. The flowers were introduced into Europe in the 18th Century, where they became very popular from about 1810 to 1840. Today the flowers are still studied and grown by dahlia lovers across the globe.
